Malerie Murphy - Director of Operations
Centre of Recovery & Exercise (CORE) – Longwood, Florida

When we established the Center of Recovery and Exercise (CORE) in September 2011 we were excited to become one of the first clinics in the world to secure the therapeutic benefits of the Restorative Therapies RT600 Step and Stand for our clients.  RT600 is the first, and currently only, therapy system to combine gait training, with weight bearing activity and Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES).

As an Exercise Physiologist, I understand the importance of utilizing FES with an activity based program to optimize recovery potential for clients with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and related neurological disorders.  CORE is dedicated to providing access to this crucial therapy for as many clients as possible.

I was familiar with Restorative Therapies having used RT300 at a prior clinic and was keen to secure RTI’s state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment for CORE. Establishing a relationship with Restorative Therapies ensures that CORE will remain a leading provider of cutting edge FES technology.

Since installing RT600 we have had the opportunity to evaluate its’ effectiveness with a number of clients, both complete and incomplete SCI. We have observed a number of therapeutic benefits as these clients have made progress with their individual recovery programs.

We observed an increase in heart rate on RT600 compared to other forms of activities, leading to cardiovascular benefits. Muscle mass also increased, as did weight bearing capacity, from an initial 20% in the first session to up to 65% in later sessions. Session duration was limited to 20 minutes for the first session, but was later extended to 30 – 45 minutes, with some clients achieving a full one-hour session. All clients displayed positive mental attitudes from being able to move in a standing position.

Clients were evaluated initially on RT300 to determine their ability to accept the electrical stimulation before progressing to RT600. All clients who advanced to RT600 were able to complete the sessions designed for them.

RT600 is currently the most effective therapy system available. Because of the observed benefits, both physically and mentally, I would recommend RT600 Step and Stand to any clinic working with people with spinal cord injuries and related disorders.

CORE provides an activity-based neurorecovery program to optimize the function, health, and independence for clients with spinal cord injuries and related disorders.
