How to use the RT300 arm cycle

You ride the RT300-SLSA or RT300-SA from your wheelchair or, if you are not in a wheelchair, use a strong framed, well padded chair without wheels.

Typically you would build up to 30  minute sessions at least three times per week, but not more than once per day. Your clinician will prescribe the usage that is appropriate for you.

Depending on several factors including your hand and arm function, trunk control and flexibility, you may or may not be able to set yourself up on the RT300 arm cycle.

Adhesive electrodes are placed on your skin over the arm, shoulder and trunk muscle groups that your clinician selected to be electrically stimulated.

These electrodes can be used 10 to 15 times; while their adhesive and conductive gel is working.

The electrodes are connected by a cable to the SAGE controller or attached directly to an RT50 wireless stimulator - depending on how many muscles you are stimulating.

Your hands are then secured into the RT300s arm rests using velcro straps.  There are a few different models of arm rests, the choice will depend upon various factors including your size, shoulder stability, wrist and hand strength.

Your wheelchair or chair is secured to the RT300 using wheelchair restraints.  These are the same restraints that you often see in vehicles.

Restraints aren't used with the RT300-SA system.

Now that you are positioned and connected, you tap GO on the SAGE controller.

SAGE will download your latest therapy settings from RTILink and your session will start.

You can read more about the phases of a session here>>

SAGE will control the stimulation patterns being sent to your arms, shoulder and trunk, producing a smooth cycling motion.

Once your therapy session has completed, SAGE will save all of your results back to RTILink where you can see them.

There are several outcome measures that you can look at on RTILink.  Two important ones are:

  • Energy expended in kCal / hour
    - how much energy you are expending
  • Distance cycled
    - a measure of your endurance
On the right you can see how much, on average, people improve in these two key outcomes after their first 100 therapy sessions.
