Who is Restorative Therapies?

Restorative Therapies, Inc, based in Baltimore MD, is the world's leading developer of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) powered systems, designed to help people with neurological disorders achieve their full potential.

What is FES?

FES is a well established rehabilitation technique that uses pulses of electrical current to stimulate peripheral nerves evoking muscle contractions and patterned muscle activity. With Restorative Therapies systems, FES creates patterned movement in arms, legs and trunk. FES enables muscles to work and perform activities even though the muscles may be weak or paralyzed through neurological disease or injury.   Read more >>

Who's using Restorative Therapies FES systems?

Since its launch in 2005 over 15,000 adults and children have undertaken over 500,000 therapy sessions on the RT300. They included people with both complete and incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Brain Injury, Transverse Myelitis, Leukodystrophy and Spina Bifida.

What does FES feel like?

Individuals vary in their response to the stimulation. Most individuals with complete spinal cord injury report no sensation at all. Individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury, MS, CP, stroke and most other neurological disorders talk of a tingling sensation which is usually well tolerated. Some individuals do not like the sensation and choose to decline the therapy.

Where can I try out the system?

Restorative Therapies systems are being used in a growing number of rehabilitation centers around the world, with RT300 systems in well over 200 clinics in the USA alone.

Contact Restorative Therapies to discover where you can try an FES powered system.

Can I use the therapy system at home?

RT300 was specifically designed for use both in your home and rehabilitation centers. It is compact, portable, easy to set up and is controlled by SAGE, our smart stimulation therapy system.

SAGE provides automatic therapy progression in response to individual progress, and ongoing user feedback via RTILInk.com

How will I know if it is working for me?

The first obvious indication will be the muscle contractions in response to the stimulation, at the same time as patterned movement of the stimulated limbs.

Dynamic Motor Support will ensure patterned activity occurs immediately irrespective of individual muscle strength. Some individuals also talk of feeling tired after their session and the cardio vascular impact of the therapy.

Other benefits will only come in time after regular and consistent use of the system.

How often should I use the system?

This is something to discuss with your clinician, but we usually like to see sessions completed on most days.  Regularity is very important.

How long should a session be for me?

This is also something to discuss with your clinician, but we usually like to see sessions of between 30 minutes and an hour.

What if I have a problem using the system at home?

Restorative Therapies provides ongoing support direct to home based users.  We can be contacted via the web site or call
800 609-9166.

What if I want to stimulate additional muscles?

Restorative Therapies systems provide a minimum of 6 built in channels of electrical stimulation. This number can be expanded up to 10 with the addition of RT50 wireless stimulators.

More stimulation channels means you can work up to any combination of 10 muscles while leg cycling: quadriceps; hamstrings; gluteals; gastroc; anterior tibialis; erector spinae; abdominals.
