Murderball - a movie fund raiserRead about Murderball the movie. NEW: Murderball kits are now available from the United Spinal Association This information was provided to RTI by a 20 year old with a high level spinal cord injury. He raised $13,000. You can do it too! There are six steps to the Murderball movie fundraiser: 1. Create a list of friends and family 2. Create a fun and creative event to get your friends and family interested - in this case the Murderball movie 3. Plan the logistics of the event. Purchase tickets and/or food 4. Choose a date for the fundraiser. Send out invitations and fliers 5. Prepare and organize fundraiser event 6. Send thank you notes out to all those that donated First, take all of the cards that people sent you when you were first injured and put the addresses all together. These people all care about you and would do anything to make you feel better. Outlook on your computer is a great program that will keep all the addresses in your computer and then merge them with an invitation and labels for envelopes. This program will keep you organized so that the next fundraiser you have, all your contacts will already be in one location. The first fundraiser you have can either have the goal of being a one time fundraiser or be the first of many fundraisers. If it's the first of many fundraisers consider it a friend raiser. Find a movie that all of your friends would be interested in. Well publicized movies that people are anticipating are a good choice. I chose Murderball because it related so well to what I had been through. It also got really good press on MTV and my friends were interested in seeing it with me. Find a theater where the movie of your choice can be played. Call the theater and see if they give discounted, or group rates for fundraisers. Determine the price for each person, we were charged $6.00 by the theater for the tickets. We charged $20.00 per person which gave us a $12.00 profit. Make a flyer or invitation that publicizes the fundraiser and invites these people to the event. Let them know what they are supporting. On a separate card, ask for their name, address, if they would like part of our mailing list for future events and a space for donation amount. Give the option of not coming, but still supporting the cause by making a donation. Leave a blank box for them to write any amount. Provide a response envelope with your address on it. Mail this to everyone on your list. Make a flyer with all the information and stuff into the mailboxes in your neighborhood. We used “evite” to invite people electronically over the Internet through e-mail. Make announcements at your school. Put flyers up at the school, library, grocery store, hospitals, anywhere you think it would be seen. Give a bunch to your friends to give to their friends. Call the distributor of the film and ask if they have any promotional materials to give out during your fundraiser. We got mini-murderballs and posters from Think Films. We bought some candy and snacks from Costco, and packaged all this stuff into “goody bags” to give out. |
